An ACCA-CA ANZ joint event, Voices of Accountability, will explore the role whistleblowers and the mediaplay in promoting accountability and the challenges they face in speaking truth about wrongdoing and threats to the public interest. Journalists and whistleblowers have a tight-knit yet complex relationship. Although both need each other, their exchanges are often tense.

A real whistleblower – Sylvian Mansotte uncovered a $20 million fraud that spanned 12 years and led to the perpetrator – an executive with 30 years of experience in the company – admitting to the crime, and ultimately being sentenced to 12 years in prison. He will share the decisions he had to make in blowing the whistle, the challenges that comes with reporting wrongdoing and the impact it can have on someone’s life and career.

This experience inspired Sylvain to found Whispli, a two-way platform that enables the anonymous communication of sensitive information.

We will also have Conrad Raj, who is now a retired journalist, arguably the best scoop reporter in Singapore. In 1995, he covered the the British merchant bank Barings crisis. Barings collapsed after Singapore-based “rogue trader” Nick Leeson made mammoth trading losses on futures markets of £827m (US$1.4 billion). In this session, Conrad will share with us how he broke Nick Leeson’s story and his views on a journalist’s role in whistleblowing in the 21st Century.

Participants for this workshop also get a complimentary ticket to watch THE INSIDER!

Participants who registered after 2 Oct will receive a complimentary ticket to THE WIZARD OF LIES instead.
